Halloween

Why is there no knitting in my crafting?

All of last week was crunch time. I am not sure how it happened, but I was the last one in my family to get prepared for Halloween. Maybe it was because my costume had the most the DIY.

There was felt…and hot glue gun injuries.

Paint to ruin my manicure. (But let’s be honest, I do my own manicures…so bad could I have possibly ruined it?)

Sharpies and wigs.

And quite a lot of hand sewing things to other things…yes, I’m sewing these as I’m wearing them.

And makeup (which is an area that is pretty foreign to me).

It was a lot of DIY, but I think it turned out okay. Granted, no one (well maybe a few small children) knew who I was and my husband’s store bought mask and gloves were a bigger hit (which is annoying when you put that much work into a costume), but my daughter appreciated that I dressed up as a Monster High Doll for her, even without my finding latex gills.

Me and Mjolnir

Mjolnir is good for many things, but putting eyelets in a super villain corset? Um…no.

I did eventually find a real hammer. As of this writing, the corset is almost complete and I’ve encountered little bodily damage.

Halloween is coming…

I hate secret projects.

I hate them because I feel that my lack of sharing makes you think I am not doing anything with all this free time I have on my hands.

Soon (hopefully), all will be revealed.

In the meantime…unedited…

Halloween crafting…

Tuesday, November 1st, 2011 | At the office, blah blah blah, crafts, sewing | No Comments

Well, I just knew that my lovely dress wasn’t going to get done by Halloween. My place is still in a state of upheaval and we have had visitors coming and going. I have pretty much decided to give myself until next year to get all of that done…which then left me to try and work on my Plan B costume. I was invited to a Harry Potter themed Halloween party and needed something to wear!

Made myself some radish earrings.

And I took a skirt that I had made a while ago and hemmed it with help from Mallory.

She showed me this cross stitch thing.

The cool thing about this cross stitch thing is that you kind of sew backwards. Since Mallory is left-handed and I am right handed, we were both able to sew the hem in opposite directions and meet on the other side!

Me.

It’s been a crazy couple of days, but I figured I should get some blogging out of my system before I have to leave town for the rest of the week.

Halloween was a pretty eventful day all around, with Trick or Treating and stuff. I did the Ramona thing, but this time I wore something more comfortable…and a different wig.

With pink hair...

And this time I had a stowaway…

Bear makes an appearance.

Tugs got to bring Bear home for Halloween weekend, so we took him Trick or Treating with us. He spent a lot of time in Mommy’s subspace suitcase, but that’s okay..he got to come out during dinner…

photo.JPG

Trick or Treating always ends up at the mall food court.

I have to say, the best part of these Bear visits is the journal entry portion of the project. I think the kids journal entries are too precious.

He included my hammer and subspace suitcase!

After Trick or Treating I got the news that my Grandmother had passed away. My mom was waiting until after we were back from having fun to tell me. It was good that she waited.

So, I will be leaving for Detroit very soon. I am going by myself, and given that I am terrified of flying, I am trying to make sure I bring plenty of things to keep me occupied (and drugs to knock me out should I need it). I’ll be bringing my laptop, some yarn to make something from the new Vampire Knits book, and that thing I affectionately refer to as “that damn french sweater”.

Devil’s Night

It’s already felt like a jam packed weekend and it isn’t over yet.

Last night I was out late at the my LYS. They were having a Vampire Knits signing and Halloween party. Yes, I spent the entire day in that blue wig!

Cute!

It was a lot of fun. Sangria, Cake, knitting…what could be better?

Today was full of things to do too. We spent the afternoon at the kids’ school for their Fall Festival. I don’t ever remember having stuff like this at school when I was a kid. The highlight for me was the main stage where they had bands playing. The cool thing is that all the bands that played were made up of kids. How cute!

This evening we carved pumpkins. As a kid, we always carved out pumpkins on Devil’s Night. I grew up outside of Detroit and we used to sit out in the garage, carve pumpkins, and make sure no one soaped the windows or TP’d the house.

The twins’ aren’t real sure about the mechanics of carving a pumpkin and since I try to be a good parent and not give my 5 year olds knives, I asked them to draw what they wanted carved on the front of the pumpkins. The funny thing is, they got all intricate and tiny with their drawings, so we tried to do the best we could with the enormous knives we had to carve them with.

Mommy's pumpkin is the one with the moustache.

So, as I am prone to do lately, I am up late crafting. Everyone is in bed sleeping and I am hanging out til the wee hours doing whatever. I emptied a bobbin tonight and started spinning my Freckle Face Fibers Bombyx/Merino.

Enchanted Hollow...just started spinning...

Enchanted Hollow...definitely my colors.

I think I am going to work on it some more…I have lots to think about…like what I am going to wear out for Trick Or Treating…

Last minute stuff…

Thursday, October 28th, 2010 | blah blah blah, crafts, FO's, knitting, Random Craftiness, sewing | 3 Comments

I was a busy girl last night. Not only did I get the subspace suitcase done, but I also finished my fingerless gloves…

At least I got my owl mitts done...

An owl in a tree...I'm not sure anyone will notice that...

I really didn’t *need* these for my costume, but I thought they would be a good addition. Aren’t they cute? I showed a couple of the girls at work and they suggested I start designing some patterns so I can sell them on etsy (I guess fingerless gloves would make a good Christmas present). It’s a pretty good idea. For the record, I didn’t design these…I picked them out because I liked the owl cables.

I think I got a lot accomplished considering I also got home later than usual AND went for a run too. Yay me!

Getting ready for Halloween!

Tuesday, October 26th, 2010 | blah blah blah, crafts, Random Craftiness | No Comments

I love Halloween. It is probably my favorite holiday. I have fond memories of cider mills, picking pumpkins, leaves changing color and going camping with my folks.

October also seems to be the time of year where I get seriously homesick for Michigan. It’s beautiful there in autumn.

So, while Los Angeles doesn’t feel the same during this time of year, I am doing my best to make the most of it. Luckily, It’s been cool and cloudy here…so it feels a bit more like home.

To get the kids ready for the holiday, I’ve been taking walks with them in the evening after dark. We go out looking for houses that are decorated. They love it, it’s always like a mini adventure with Mommy. I let them pick where they want to go and we walk the neighborhood.

They think it's haunted...

We also met some friends at Underwood Family Farms to go pumpkin picking.

And, of course, it wouldn’t be complete without our celebrity sightings. We saw Christian Bale and Jon Heder…

Napoleon!!

Now I know, I know… this is a crafty blog…so what kind of crafting have I done for the holiday? Well, since we haven’t carved pumpkins yet, there was only my Halloween costume to get together…

It’s been a busy couple of weeks, so there isn’t much to report knitting-wise. I have been having some fun though!

The dust settles…

Monday, November 3rd, 2008 | blah blah blah, knitting, UFO's | 5 Comments

So my parents left last night to head back to Michigan after a week long visit here in southern California. We always plan a ton of stuff every time they come out, and this time was no exception. The week was full of running around and big dinners and not a lot of quality sleep time because the kids wanna wake up the grandparents and play.

Halloween was fun. I decided to dress up for work. There were really only two of us that dressed up. I couldn’t pass up the chance to post a photo of our costumes…

Alice and the cow...

Alice and the cow...

I dressed up as Alice in Wonderland. I would say about 50% of the people that came in to the office actually figured out who I was. I had a bowl of candy with an “Eat me” sign and a “Drink me” sign on the water cooler, but people asked me if I was just about everything BUT Alice. I heard everything from “Snow White” to “Swiss Miss”. The latter would have been pretty close if Mr. Cow would have been at my desk at the time.

I am going to miss my co-workers….

Which leads me to my big news. I have been having some serious writer’s block with all the excitement swirling around me. For a few weeks now I have been keeping a big secret, but now that it is “officially” out, I can post it here. I somehow landed a new job! I am freaking excited beyond all belief! I wasn’t actively looking for it, I had just heard about it from a friend. I had agreed to interview really not thinking they would hire me. Surprise, surprise!! My last day at my current employer is next week. Eek!

Back on the knitting track…while my mom was here, I dragged her to the shop twice. The first time we stopped by was to pick up some yarn I had ordered and do some looking around for yarn I need for the Wooly Wormhead Mystery Beret KAL on Ravelry. Oh yes, casting on another project before Christmas. Holy crap, I haven’t even started any Christmas knitting. Should I just give it up?

The second time I took her to the shop, she was a real trooper and sat through our usual Sunday Sock KAL and class. There was only one student…and two people showed up for KAL help. Mom spent here time catching up on scrapbooking magazines. I am almost done with a project though! Those monkey socks are almost done….toes are all that is needed! Oh, and I started legwarmers, and ripped them out, and have every intention to start again. I just received an e-mail from my friend titled “Operation Leg Warmers 12/5/08”. That is when I need them by…not a problem, I can multitask….
