My handspun…all growed up.

There really is something special about seeing folks create projects with yarn that you have spun.

Last CogKNITive Fiber Retreat, I had donated some yarn for raffle prizes. The stuff you see below was from that donation. My friend Loretta (who is seriously one of the sweetest people I have ever met in my life and is amazing with a crochet hook) got her hands on it and made the lovely cowl you see below.

Look at it! It’s so….pretty!

These are her photos from her Ravelry page. The pattern is the Danube DK Shell Cowl by Cathy Campbell.

It really turned out lovely.

This really has me wanting to make something with my own hand spun. I haven’t made anything with my own yarn in awhile…I should do that.

(Well, when I am done with all of my current WIP’s).

I’m seeing tentacles!

Monday, June 23rd, 2014 | blah blah blah, cowl, knitting, Pattern, WIP, yarn | No Comments

Since I have had some serious project ADD lately, I have been moving slow in getting any real knitting done. It’s okay though…I am in no hurry. I have other projects that I really should be working on anyway.

Big Al, from both sides.

Big Al is my first attempt at double knitting. I really like the idea of having my knitting be reversible. I wasn’t so sure how he would turn out at first, but now that I am starting to see the design emerge, I am getting really excited about it.  The best part…the Double Knit Kraken Cowl pattern is super easy. I think it’s a great pattern for anyone who would like to give double knitting a try.

Happy August!

Saturday, August 3rd, 2013 | blah blah blah, etsy, fiber, handspun, shawl, spinning, WIP | No Comments

Here is that size comparison photo. It’s my completed In The Pink shawl on top of my Celestarium.

Here I am, writing first thing on on a Saturday morning from my bed while my husband shows me pictures of corgis. If I had a cup of coffee, I would feel like a real writer, but that requires actual movement. Who brings the coffee to all those writers who take pictures of their laptops while snug in their beds? My husband doesn’t even know how to use my coffee maker and my kids are out of town.

I meant to blog yesterday, but the day got away from me. I was pretty productive, but in a non-fiber way. Sometimes your hands need a break and honestly, I needed one. I haven’t been a good spinner, taking breaks when I should…and that last bobbin was a real slog for me.

My Bunny Butt Fiber and a bobbin of blue and purple Red Fish Dye Works Camel/Silk.

How do I fix that situation? By starting another bobbin, of course! This time I am justifying it by spinning it thicker than the previous two bobbins. Plus, it’s Loki fiber from my good friend David at Octarine Fibers…so I can’t wait to see how it spins up!

It’s just a virus…

Once again, I have deemed my home “The House of Sick”.

Over the holiday weekend, my daughter caught some nasty cough…then my son. They have been getting up in the middle of the night and coughing like crazy. Two nights in a row, I couldn’t get a decent nights sleep to save my life. It’s cold and uncomfortable when you’re trying to sleep on the floor next to the sick kid on the couch.

Because there isn’t much to do 1 a.m. on a Monday morning when your kid is miserable and wants to chat and eat popsicles, I did things like knit and felt a couple of antlers.

So this is what I have to show for taking care of my sick kids, and starting to get run down and sick in the process.

Last nights project...

Deer with Little Antlers Hat.

I would consider each of these quickie projects. Each took just hours to finish because they were knit with bulky yarn. My stash is a little bit lighter now.

Mall crazies and other things…

Tuesday, October 28th, 2008 | blah blah blah, crafts, knitting | No Comments

Ok, like life wasn’t crazy enough. Mix the twins with grandma and grandpa for the week and you get chaos. Some of the chaos is good though.

Friday night I went to the shop for the usual stitch ‘n’ bitch. My friend talked me into it….hell, it is better than sitting in the cell phone lot at LAX for three hours watching the planes come in. Either way I would be getting some knitting done. So Friday night I finished off my cowl. It turned out pretty good. I also started my crazy legwarmers. I was planning on leaving at 9 p.m. to go pick up the folks but nothing ever goes as planned. 8:50 p.m. I get a call from mom, they have landed, a good 40 minutes early!

The cowl is cute though, right? The yarn was fabulous and I really do think I am going to buy some to make the February Lady Sweater. It would be so cute in brown, and fluffy soft!

So, I had taken a couple of days off work. It didn’t feel much like a long weekend though. It’s been a whirlwind of visiting places and shopping, as well as trying to take care of the every day stuff. I had all these things I wanted to get done, but I haven’t even started yet. I am planning on getting the sewing machine out tomorrow night come hell or high water. I have a stack of things that need to be mended. I am also still knitting those monkey socks. I turned the heel today, hooray!

Today was the last day of my long weekend. My mom decided she was going to try and stimulate the economy on her own and we went to the mall. I never thought I would say this, but clothes shopping can be fun! While we were at the mall not only did some jewelry store owner get in my dad’s face while he was sitting on a bench waiting for mom and I (long story) but my parents also might have made it onto Telemundo. All that excitement ended in a nice dinner out where my Dad, reaching under the table to grab my son’s foot, inadvertently grabbed my husbands knee. My family will have plenty of comedic material from this day.

Ok I am better now. Talk about a lot of stuff all happening at once! It has been a crazy week. I have to admit, not much knitting is happening at present, but a lot of other stuff is going on. Most of it revolves around trying to get my home in a state of cleanliness and order because my folks are flying out friday night to stay with us for a week. Where the hell do I hide all the fiber?

Sidenote: I really don’t NEED to hide the fiber. My mom understands the obsession and embraces it…thankfully.

So, on the crafty side. I finished the Bubbles and Cables cowl, well, I haven’t acually gotten it off the needles yet. I was looking to see if there was a good stretchy bind off besides EZ’s sewn bind off that I could do.

I only ended up doing about three repeats on this one as opposed to the five that the pattern called for. I don’t know, maybe I have a squatty neck or something, but 5 repeats seemed like a whole lotta fabric to me.

I am also thinking about using this same yarn for the February Lady sweater, but I discovered something (while wearing black and waiting to go to out to meet up with some friends). I found that the yarn sure does shed. I was all fuzzy. Now, I am not sure if it would matter much, I mean, I am completely and totally in love with this yarn…and I would probably be knitting that sweater in dark brown or something….

I also have been playing around with the shrinky dinks some more. Look at my new stitch markers!!

So many WIP’s, so little time…

Saturday, October 18th, 2008 | blah blah blah, knitting, UFO's | 1 Comment

Sometimes I feel like it takes feats of super-human strength to get on the computer. I have been gone for a whole week! In my defense, it was a very busy week. Chock full o’ trips to places like the pediatrician. Luckily, we are all on the mend and hopefully the worst of the nastiness is over. It’s been a week of good news too though…..and for a few days I thought I lost my knitting mojo, but have since gotten it back! Yay!

Last night was the weekly stitch ‘n’ bitch. I didn’t end up taking Lucy with me, because I had volunteered to knit a cowl for the shop.

Friday Night at Unwind

So, Stephanie had a bunch of patterns and yarn out for the cowls for the shop. I had picked the Abstract CaterPillar Cowl but had realized it was a quick knit and had only a few rows to go by the time I left the shop, so I also grabbed the Bubbles and Cables Cowl to work on. I started that one this morning…

Bubbles and Cables in progress

The Caterpillar cowl was knit up in Colinette Zanziba and some ribbon in the same colorway. I loved the yarn, but think this pattern would look cool in some of my hadnspun. I am shopping the stash as we speak so I can knit another one. The Bubbles and Cables Cowl is being knit up in Aslan Trends Invernal. Really, I didn’t think the yarn was something I would use until I picked it up and took a good look at it. It is Angora, Merino and Nylon and has a pretty little halo when knit up. It is sooo soft too. It is a worsted weight yarn, so I may buy some to work on that Wolly Wormhead Mystery Beret Knit-a-long I am trying to convince everyone at the shop to do with me. I am an enabler. <evil grin>

Even though I had lost my mojo for a few days…well maybe a week…I did  *actually* get some work done on projects I already have on the needles. I did two repeats on my monkeys and one whole 20 row repeat on my Iceland sweater. A little sad, I know, but at least it was *something*. I was actually starting to enjoy the even rows on the sweater. Knit the knits and purl the purls. It was very calming during a very stressful week. Now If I could just do that and not have to contend with the odd rows…

Holy crap! I have a long way to go! I would try and tackle this tomorrow, but my friend and I will be at the shop for the Monkey KAL and class. We have 3 students slated for tomorrow. I imagine not much personal knitting will get done, but we are both pretty jazzed that people keep wanting to take the sock class. I have ideas for some classes to teach after the new year, but I think I will keep those to myself for now. I have a tendency to pile on. I do have enough going on right now, don’t I? 😀
