Costume

Why is there no knitting in my crafting?

All of last week was crunch time. I am not sure how it happened, but I was the last one in my family to get prepared for Halloween. Maybe it was because my costume had the most the DIY.

There was felt…and hot glue gun injuries.

Paint to ruin my manicure. (But let’s be honest, I do my own manicures…so bad could I have possibly ruined it?)

Sharpies and wigs.

And quite a lot of hand sewing things to other things…yes, I’m sewing these as I’m wearing them.

And makeup (which is an area that is pretty foreign to me).

It was a lot of DIY, but I think it turned out okay. Granted, no one (well maybe a few small children) knew who I was and my husband’s store bought mask and gloves were a bigger hit (which is annoying when you put that much work into a costume), but my daughter appreciated that I dressed up as a Monster High Doll for her, even without my finding latex gills.

Halloween crafting…

Tuesday, November 1st, 2011 | At the office, blah blah blah, crafts, sewing | No Comments

Well, I just knew that my lovely dress wasn’t going to get done by Halloween. My place is still in a state of upheaval and we have had visitors coming and going. I have pretty much decided to give myself until next year to get all of that done…which then left me to try and work on my Plan B costume. I was invited to a Harry Potter themed Halloween party and needed something to wear!

Made myself some radish earrings.

And I took a skirt that I had made a while ago and hemmed it with help from Mallory.

She showed me this cross stitch thing.

The cool thing about this cross stitch thing is that you kind of sew backwards. Since Mallory is left-handed and I am right handed, we were both able to sew the hem in opposite directions and meet on the other side!

A bunch of folks at work had the same idea this year.

Fashion District, here we come!

Thursday, October 13th, 2011 | sewing | No Comments

Well, I have had a lot of things to write about and very little time to do so. A lot of my things are still in boxes, my mother-in-law is still here, and I am expecting my parents to arrive for their visit in 9 days (yes, they are staying with us). It’s all a little overwhelming. I have been a busy girl on the crafting front though, even if it hasn’t looked much like it.

So, I finally got around to taking my sewing machine in to get repaired. I got her back and she is good as new. Thank goodness because I did take a little field trip to the Fashion District with my friend Mallory in search of fabric for a Halloween costume. Now, I am not guaranteeing it will be done *this* Halloween, but it might be for next…or any Renaissance Faire that might happen to pop up before then.

The view for breakfast.

We started the day at a local Starbuck’s and had some breakfast and coffee to get ourselves energized for some serious shopping.

Mallary with some fabric.

Buying ribbon.

Maybe….if I were making a super hero costume.

Essentially, what I have been looking to do is make a dress similar to Sansa Stark’s dress in “Game of Thrones”. I’ve been kind of obsessing about it for ahile, but I have been reluctant to start because I am not sure my skills are up to par. I have sewn skirts, but I haven’t tried a project like this…

Beautiful!

This is the one I am fascinated with…

I have been scouring the internet trying to find a pattern for this dress. I love that it has ties in the front. Of course, I haven’t been able to find a pattern for this particular gown, but Mallory just happens to be a costume designer and she has so kindly offered to help me. I’m nervous, but I am going to go for it!

My purchase.

So I have my fabric…it’s a beautiful icy blue dupioni silk. This guy named Ray gave us a great deal on it (and invited us to the club because he can appreciate nerdy girls).  I think we are going to try and start it this coming weekend. Now I just need to figure out what box this lovely stuff is in. Eek!

Last minute stuff…

Thursday, October 28th, 2010 | blah blah blah, crafts, FO's, knitting, Random Craftiness, sewing | 3 Comments

I was a busy girl last night. Not only did I get the subspace suitcase done, but I also finished my fingerless gloves…

At least I got my owl mitts done...

An owl in a tree...I'm not sure anyone will notice that...

I really didn’t *need* these for my costume, but I thought they would be a good addition. Aren’t they cute? I showed a couple of the girls at work and they suggested I start designing some patterns so I can sell them on etsy (I guess fingerless gloves would make a good Christmas present). It’s a pretty good idea. For the record, I didn’t design these…I picked them out because I liked the owl cables.

I think I got a lot accomplished considering I also got home later than usual AND went for a run too. Yay me!

Getting ready for Halloween!

Tuesday, October 26th, 2010 | blah blah blah, crafts, Random Craftiness | No Comments

I love Halloween. It is probably my favorite holiday. I have fond memories of cider mills, picking pumpkins, leaves changing color and going camping with my folks.

October also seems to be the time of year where I get seriously homesick for Michigan. It’s beautiful there in autumn.

So, while Los Angeles doesn’t feel the same during this time of year, I am doing my best to make the most of it. Luckily, It’s been cool and cloudy here…so it feels a bit more like home.

To get the kids ready for the holiday, I’ve been taking walks with them in the evening after dark. We go out looking for houses that are decorated. They love it, it’s always like a mini adventure with Mommy. I let them pick where they want to go and we walk the neighborhood.

They think it's haunted...

We also met some friends at Underwood Family Farms to go pumpkin picking.

And, of course, it wouldn’t be complete without our celebrity sightings. We saw Christian Bale and Jon Heder…

Now I know, I know… this is a crafty blog…so what kind of crafting have I done for the holiday? Well, since we haven’t carved pumpkins yet, there was only my Halloween costume to get together…

It’s nearly done. I will make sure to post pictures!

Happy Halloween!

Saturday, October 31st, 2009 | blah blah blah | 1 Comment

It’s been a busy couple of weeks, so there isn’t much to report knitting-wise. I have been having some fun though!

Got caught by DOG!

So, since I have been slacking when it comes to the blog again, I thought I would try a video blog post…
