cowl

My handspun…all growed up.

There really is something special about seeing folks create projects with yarn that you have spun.

Last CogKNITive Fiber Retreat, I had donated some yarn for raffle prizes. The stuff you see below was from that donation. My friend Loretta (who is seriously one of the sweetest people I have ever met in my life and is amazing with a crochet hook) got her hands on it and made the lovely cowl you see below.

Look at it! It’s so….pretty!

These are her photos from her Ravelry page. The pattern is the Danube DK Shell Cowl by Cathy Campbell.

It really turned out lovely.

This really has me wanting to make something with my own hand spun. I haven’t made anything with my own yarn in awhile…I should do that.

(Well, when I am done with all of my current WIP’s).

I’m seeing tentacles!

Monday, June 23rd, 2014 | blah blah blah, cowl, knitting, Pattern, WIP, yarn | No Comments

Since I have had some serious project ADD lately, I have been moving slow in getting any real knitting done. It’s okay though…I am in no hurry. I have other projects that I really should be working on anyway.

Big Al, from both sides.

Big Al is my first attempt at double knitting. I really like the idea of having my knitting be reversible. I wasn’t so sure how he would turn out at first, but now that I am starting to see the design emerge, I am getting really excited about it.  The best part…the Double Knit Kraken Cowl pattern is super easy. I think it’s a great pattern for anyone who would like to give double knitting a try.

Friday Night Block Party…

Here I go again….stacking up my drafts until I forget what it was I wanted to say. Thank goodness I am organized with my pictures… at least.

So this is the kinda stuff I do on Friday Nights…to keep me off the mean streets of Burbank.

The pictures below show how you can block a garment in no time. It was dry enough to unpin and take home at the end of the night.

photo 1

Courtney’s hooded cape thingy.

photo 2

She had stitches on a cable to seam later. She was stepping on the towel to get some of the water out and ended up breaking one of the end caps for her needles.

photo 3

Pinning it out with a little help from Angelique.

Hopefully I will get to see what it looks like once it’s seamed up…but it looked really good when she left my place that night. Maybe I’ll get to snap some pictures later.

I also thought I would snap a WIP picture…of course, there isn’t much more done on my project yet. I haven’t had much time to work on it lately.

photo 4

Angelique’s shawl, Courtney’s Signe hat…and my Big Al (well, a couple of his tentacles at least).

photo 5

My Signe hat alongside Courtney’s WIP. You’d think it was freaky friday or something. Usually our color choices are the other way around…

Stopping by to say “hi”…

It has not been an easy road, but I am slowly getting there.

I started Big Al at least three times. Ripping out because I was unsure about gauge…ripping out again because of twisted yarn…I was starting to feel like a complete novice. I thought maybe I was losing my knitting mojo.

I hope I am not jinxing it, but I feel like I am on track now. My Miss Bab’s yarn has held up well despite my abuse. I am being extra careful, but not going so crazy that I can’t work on this project while I catch up on my favorite television. I am really liking the way it is turning out so far.

He’s waving his little tentacle to say hello..

And now that I am getting a handle on double knitting, Courtney has talked me into trying a steeking project. I am not sure where it will fall in the queue for this year, but I already have all the yarn I need for it. Court frogged the Mountain View Cardigan that has been sitting half-knit in my stash closet and wound it into the most amazing center pull balls. It’s ready to be Oranje now.

Seriously, Court’s hand wound, center pull balls are legit.

The Genesis of Big Al…

While I’ve been in the midst of taking care of all of the things one needs to take care of when they have had their house burglarized, I decided to take a little Ravelry break. Imagine my surprise when I found this:

20140428-125807.jpg

This is so sweet. I cried.

I had been intending to do this project… sticking the pattern in my wish list so I wouldn’t forget it. I had just had a discussion with Courtney about this being my playoff knitting project. See, my home team is the Red Wings…and in Hockeytown we have something we call Big Al.

Big Al. Thanks NHL.com!

I’ve been putting it off. I needed to get my current project done first. I knew I would have a hard time picking it back up again if I put it down to start this. It’s pretty much how I operate these days. I decided to torture myself by keeping the yarn in front of my while I knit on my Lunar Progression.

20140428-125824.jpg

My yarn for Big Al. I have orangey octopus on the brain.

Well, the Red Wings were eliminated, but that doesn’t mean I can’t still have have a playoff knit, I guess. I decided to dive in and start double knitting on my very own Big Al. It’s my first time doing this, so I am a little nervous.

Double knitting. It’s interesting.

As for my Lunar Progression…well, more on that later…

Bindi’s Path

Hey Everyone!

While I am off being busy with work and kids and life, I thought I would take this quick opportunity to give my friend a well deserved signal boost.

My friend Karen is fabulous knitter/designer/animal lover/human being who designed a pattern to help out our local animal shelter. Check out her press release below…

BURBANK ANIMAL SHELTER TO BENEFIT FROM RELEASE OF “BINDI’S PATH”

Paw-Print Knitting Pattern Based on Real Life Rescued Cat

LOS ANGELES, CA (April 15, 2014) Karen Eckhoff has released “Bindi’s Path”, a scarf, stole and cowl pattern set with two-way wavy paw prints reminiscent of her epileptic cat Bindi’s wobbly path through life. Diagnosed with Idiopathic Epilepsy, Bindi was rescued by the Volunteers of the Burbank Animal Shelter and put up for adoption. Given 50/50 odds of living to her first birthday, in 2014, Bindi turned ten. “Bindi’s Path” is a tribute to her tenacious attitude and sweet disposition. The pattern is available at http://www.ravelry.com/patterns/library/bindis-path. 100% of the profits from its sale will go directly to the Volunteers of the Burbank Animal Shelter (http://thevbas.org/), the organization that saved her life.

Says Eckhoff, “Bindi arrived at the Burbank, CA animal shelter as a six week-old feral stray, having seizures, flea-infested, blind, deaf, and missing a claw. Instead of putting her to sleep, the volunteers took her to the vet and put her up for adoption. Bindi has residual brain damage but has regained her vision and hearing. She is wobbly and has frequent “gravity breaks”, but her seizures are well-regulated with medication. She doesn’t meow or purr, but instead growls. She is quite a little character, and I love her dearly. Though she sometimes struggles, I wouldn’t change a thing about Bindi. She’s perfect as she is. I decided to combine my love of cats and my passion for knitting in order to not only celebrate Bindi’s life, but to give back to the very shelter that gave me so much when they allowed me to adopt her.”

T’was the week before Christmas…

Friday, December 20th, 2013 | blah blah blah, cowl, crochet, Holiday, KIP, knitting, UFO's, WIP | No Comments

I’m crafting in every spare moment of the day. I mean this…no joke. I eat, sleep, and breathe Christmas yarn goodness. I’m pretty tired, but I am no where near being done.

20131218-080539.jpg

I knit at sporting events…

As if I wasn’t putting enough pressure on myself, I got the teacher’s gifts completed and sent off… without taking photos of the finished projects. Doh!

I knit at brunch with my non-knitter friends…despite their teasing.

I’m a lean, mean, craftin’ machine!

Thursday, December 12th, 2013 | blah blah blah, cowl, crafts, crochet, Holiday, knitting, stash busting | No Comments
20131212-081447.jpg

I had said this represented half of the yarn I need for the holidays…but I was wrong. It’s only about a third.

I am rocketing through my holiday crafting like nobody’s business! I am making gifts for just about everyone this year. I made sure that I set clear deadlines for myself so I will know when certain things need to be done. First things first…teacher gifts!

20131212-081742.jpg

A Casu Cowl for one of the school teachers and snowflakes for the teachers at daycare.

20131212-081502.jpg

Sitting outside knitting another teacher cowl. This time it’s the Honey Cowl…which looks great in variegated yarn.

I am eager to clear out the stash. Stitches is coming up and I need to make room for more yarn! The majority of the crafting this Christmas is coming from stash…and when I say majority…I mean pretty much exclusively (cough cough withtheexceptionoftwoskeins cough cough). This means NO YARN SHOPPING. Can you believe it? Yeah…I can’t either.

It’s officially finished…

Monday, August 5th, 2013 | cowl, FO's, scarf | 2 Comments

20130803-090252.jpg
I remember a time where the officially finished version of an item was just that it was knit and bound off. Ah…how naive I was in those days! Now, things aren’t “officially” finished until blocking has happened. This means just about everything I am doing seems in some stage of unfinished-ness. It really is enough to drive you a little cuckoo if you think about it too much.

I do have something to report. That crazy dayglo Safety Scarf by Stephen West that was the 2013 LA Yarn Crawl Exclusive is officially done (well, done in my brain). I seamed it up and tucked in the ends. It could have used more blocking for that section that pulled in due to the stitch pattern, but really…who is going to be able to tell if I am wearing it?

The black and white photo is for your eye protection.

Burning out my retinas…

Thursday, May 16th, 2013 | blah blah blah, cowl, knitting, scarf, WIP | No Comments

20130516-090749.jpg

I just posted last night and I’m sure no one has even seen it…yet here I am, writing again.

It occurred to me before falling asleep last night that I didn’t post a picture of my Safety Scarf. Here it is. I am a bit further along on it than this picture would suggest. You could probably also tell that I have a thing for dayglo. I am a little bipolar that way. My inner goth loves black and grey while my inner unicorn poops rainbows all over the place. It confuses people sometimes…but it always makes perfect sense to me.

Luckily, I have a bit of both in this particular project!

I plan on taking it to lunch today with my friend Wendybird. I really want to get it finished. I love working on it, but I have to admit, I can only work on it in short bursts. Apparently, yellow happens to be a color that tires the eyes out. So imagine what it is like to knit with yarn that looks like a thick neon noodle!
