Felted Taxidermy…

Wednesday, January 21st, 2015 | Design, felting, FO's, Geekery, Holiday, Needle Felting, weaving | No Comments

Well, as we know around these parts….Christmas lasts until at least late February. Luckily, I had a hair appointment with my stylist and friend, Lacey, at Frenchy’s earlier this month. I had Lacey’s Christmas gift done, so I was excited to deliver it to her. She is super into bugs and has a quite impressive collection of them. I was hoping mine could join the fold.

Loosely based on a New England Silk Moth. Kinda funny since we fiber fiends cringe at the ‘M’ word.

I have been eager to work on more projects that incorporate different fiber arts in one piece. For this one, I used my hand loom to weave the background and then needle felted on top of it. It’s construction is the same as my Iron Giant piece.

She really liked it, and it looks great in her collection! I am so glad!

Tapestry Weaving with Maryanne Moodie

Monday, November 24th, 2014 | class, crafts, FO's, People I Meet, start to finish, tapestry, weaving | No Comments

In case you couldn’t tell, I have been all about tapestry weaving lately. I think I caught the bug when working on my Iron Giant Tribute piece…now I’m hooked!

I was having problems finding instructions for specific weaving techniques online, so I started following a handful of tapestry weavers on Instagram. One of these fabulous weavers was Maryanne Moodie.

Imagine my surprise when I read one of her photo captions and found out she would be in Los Angeles teaching at Design Love Fest. I needed to take this class! So I signed up right away and immediately turned in my time off request for work.

The class started off a little shaky. They hadn’t received all of the looms in the mail and they thought they would have to refund money to about half of us (those of us that were local). Luckily, I had told them I would like to stay and watch…and at the last minute, the looms arrived! We all breathed a sigh of relief and class got underway!

The lovely Maryanne Moodie!

So coordinated! Even my mimosa matches!

I didn’t have a whole lot done by the time class was over, but I got the chance to try a bunch of techniques. I also had taken plenty of video to get me through some of those techniques if I was stuck. They helped a lot.

My completed tapestry.

It’s finally done!! I am not totally in love with it, but it was great practice. I am glad I got the chance to learn some new rules so now I can try and break them. I have some different ideas for some tapestry designs that I am really eager to try out!

Look out, Friday!

Friday, September 19th, 2014 | blah blah blah, class, Fiber Rock Stars, tapestry, weaving | No Comments

Let me just start off by saying I know I have craft ADD lately and that my impulse control is bordering on obscene.

I woke up this morning and, while brushing my teeth, scrolled through Instagram… as is my habit lately. I saw a lovely picture of a tapestry woven by Maryanne Moodie and was awake enough to read the caption.

Oh…reeeeeallly?

Click, click, done.

I’m signed up for the class. See! No impulse control. In this case I am super glad I didn’t wait to make a decision.

My new obsession…

I know I have been pretty quiet lately. Life has me incredibly busy. I can’t ever sit still and I always need to be making things. It’s been so hard to focus….I fee like I have crafty ADD.

I just started weaving. Yes, just what I need….ANOTHER hobby. I really love it though. It is super relaxing and a pretty great stash burner. Of course, now I want to bring ALL THE TOOLS into my place. I recently bought myself a small tapestry loom from Board and Bread. It’s gorgeous and great to work on. I bought myself a larger loom from Loom and Spindle on etsy, which is also a great starter loom. I ended up staining it a bright teal color.

Weaving with my daughter.

I had some embroidery hoops left over and, on the weekends, I’ve been helping her warp them so she can weave too.

Passing it on…

So you can see, I just can’t get enough. I’ve already warped the looms back up and am ready to jump into some more weaving…well, as soon as the heatwave ends…

Iron Giant Tribute Show

Last Saturday Night was the Iron Giant Tribute Show at community/A Little Known Shop in Anaheim, CA. Hooray!! My very first art show!

IMG_4069.JPG

My family taking a look at all of the awesome art!

Community is a great little space that has small shops, gallery space, a craft space and a great walkway in-between where all sorts of vendors had set up their tables. They had food and music in the back!

Shopping and food!

I got the chance to catch up with my friend Kati who was in town for the weekend.

My mother insisted that I get a picture next to my tapestry. She’s really into sharing this kind of stuff with her friends.

My mother insisted I get this picture for her….

We had a great time and it was so nice to see old friends and meet some new people. I also bought a few things in the shop!

Art piece progress…

So, I have been busy at work on my piece for an upcoming Iron Giant Tribute Show happening Saturday, September 13th at Community in Anaheim, CA…

IronGiantShow_Sept2014

Here’s the poster!

Here is a little sneak peek that I had posted to my instagram account. Poor guy was headless for so long. He is happy now that his head is attached!

I was so glad that he finally had a head.

I hope to have him done this week sometime…it’ll probably happen this weekend. Either way, my deadline is fast approaching and I have to get this piece done and in the right hands!

Trying something new…with a deadline…

Leave it to me to volunteer to take part in something and then rethink my project until it is nothing like anything I’ve ever tried. On the bright side, it means I’m never bored.

Here’s the thing…I was asked if I wanted to take part in an art show. Of course I jumped at the opportunity, because really, when do I ever say no?

Well, I spent weeks thinking and rethinking what I would do for my project. I thought to myself over and over again “Of course, everyone is going to think I should crochet a doll. That’s easy.” It was the first thing to get crossed off the list. I wasn’t even going to keep it as an option…because I am a pain in the ass like that.

Then there were the discussions with my knitting friends. Maybe some intarsia or something? I could easily chart out something cool… Nope.

Luckily, Courtney is someone who is big on ideas. We went back and forth about what would be good. There were a bunch of suggestions she threw out…and I somehow settled on weaving.

I did my research. I wanted to do something sort of mixed up and using different techniques. Really, folks, I am feeling my way through this. It’s not like I own a lap loom…

20140730-125537-46537020.jpg

No loom? No problem.

It’s a good thing I am all about the process. I started making a loom with some nails and a picture frame. I got 3/4 done when my husband took over so I could keep my thumbs.

20140725-140012-50412861.jpg

Getting started.

20140725-140013-50413324.jpg

I use whatever I like as a tool. I like dinner forks.

So far it is looking pretty good and I just got an email today saying when I need to have my piece turned in…and it’s more time than I thought I had. I dunno…I might actually pull this off.

Tour de Fleece, Days 2 and 3

Wednesday, July 9th, 2014 | fiber, handspun, spinning, stash busting, weaving, yarn | No Comments

I started off Tour de Fleece with a bang, getting quite a lot done. I knew I couldn’t keep up that pace though. Maybe I was overachieving to prepare for the dip in productivity during the work week?

20140708-202753-73673453.jpg

Tour de Fleece, Day 2 progress.

Not bad progress for day two of the tour. Day three was a different story. Monday I got all of 5 minutes of spinning in. It was a crazy day…and with the kids and our parents coming out to Los Angeles, this week might be light on spinning time.

I’ve been trying to get other projects done too though. I decided I want to try weaving and needle felting things I love. I had a friend that was in need of a good luck charm…so I made this.

20140708-202753-73673884.jpg

An attempt at a black hole.

I should have taken this picture next to something else for size reference. It was tough, because it is small (I think maybe it had a 4 inch diameter). I did the weaving first, then I needle felted on top of it. I think my friend liked it. After making it, I thought of a couple of improvements I could make. I am planning on taking another shot at it, but in a bigger size.

Practice, practice, practice

20140704-205359.jpg

Playing around with patterns.

While I wait for all of my supplies to arrive for that project I keep procrastinating on, I decided I should try out a few things so I know what I am doing when I actually do this stuff for reals.

20140704-205427.jpg

I have so much scrap yarn for this stuff!

First things first…I needed to try out drawing a design and weaving on top of it. No problem…achievement unlocked! Oh look, I can make fringe too!

20140704-205554.jpg

All done!

I also attached it to one of the sticks my daughter and her friends collected for me at the last Girl Scout event. Yay, nature!

20140704-205604.jpg

I played around in the round too.

I also tried weaving on an embroidery hoop. Just something easy so I could try it out.

20140704-205509.jpg

Then took them to work and decorated my cubicle.

Now I have proper office decorations. Maybe I will start a collection of all of my little experiments and just hang them up at work. It’ll give me something to stare at and pet if I ever get stressed out at work.

Tour de Fleece 2014 – Day 1

20140706-014451-6291722.jpg

Some itty bitty crafting.

Ok, so my participation in Tour de Fleece this year is a little half-assed. I know I have serious stash to spin down, and honestly, the Tour is a good reason to do it.

For those of you unaware, Tour de Fleece is an event that spinners participate in on Ravelry during the Tour de France. There are actual rules for it, most based on what your team affiliation is. Different groups have different rules. I’m not a fan of rules, so we can call this Team KnitHitsTheFan, party of 1.

I waited until late afternoon to start my spinning. I spent the morning straightening up my project corner so I would be ready for that art project I am waiting to start (my twine is in the mail). I found some unassembled hearts, so I seamed and stuffed them. I also did a little bit of weaving. That’s that round thing in the picture above. Trust me, it’ll look better once I get more stuff on it.

20140706-014452-6292046.jpg

First Day Tour projects.

Since the holiday was on a Friday, I moved knit night to Saturday. It was a good reason to get together and start the Tour off right. Court brought her supported spindle to spin on, and I rocked Lucy all evening.

I guess my first day wasn’t too shabby. I thread plied 176 yards of wool single that I had sitting on a bobbin from about a week ago. I also busted through 4 ounces of 20% Milk protein/20% Seacell/60% Wool that I got from Creatively Dyed a few years back. I have three 4 ounce braids, so I am planning on spinning them all, then plying all three together.

I hope to come up with a plan of attack for my fiber, but I know how ADD I am. I’ll just end up pulling things out of the stash willy-nilly and and if I get bored spinning a color, I’ll switch to another. That is pretty much how I operate.
