Baby things

Babies, babies, everywhere…

Thursday, March 20th, 2014 | Baby things, blah blah blah | No Comments

Seriously….everyone is pregnant.

This was a gift for a very special little one that has been around a few months already. I had been hanging on to it until I could actually meet her…then I posted this picture in my drafts…and forgot it was there. It’s a great pattern to knit and I was pretty proud of my color choices for this. I  just love knitting things for babies in non-traditional colors. It makes me wish I knew how to knit when I had my babies.

Now it is in it’s new home. I would make these for all the babies…but I don’t have enough arms for that!

Baby Things!

Wednesday, September 25th, 2013 | Baby things, blah blah blah, knitting, WIP, yarn, yarn snobbery | No Comments

Ah, how I do love Blue Sky Alpaca Cotton! It’s fluffy, like yarn made of clouds.

Well, I would say I am almost at the halfway point of finishing this blanket. Its been a little stress inducing, but it’s my own fault really. I decided to start weighing the yarn after I started the project and was pretty convinced that one of the skeins was light in yardage and wouldn’t make it. What’s the worst that could happen? I can just pick up another skein…NBD. It’s not like I have to have this thing done tomorrow or anything. I’ve got plenty of time!

(And how many times have we knitters said THAT to ourselves before?)

Lovin’ this blanket!

I have nothin’ but time.

All of my friends know that I am bored. Don’t get me wrong…I do a lot during my days. I knit, spin, do an occasional chore…I send out my resume to anyone that will take it. Ya know, the important stuff.

I need something else though. A reason to think. Maybe a little challenge here and there.

A friend asked me to make some baby items for a friend of his that is expecting. So I found a booties pattern in Spanish and decided to knit it. Even though I don’t speak any Spanish.

Taking a Spanish tutorial an translating it into English.

Luckily, my friend let me take control of choosing colors. I am a big fan of not using pastel colors for babies. I think this set turned out pretty good.

…it’s only because I have been SO busy.

I spent the weekend taking a break from working on charity stuff to try and get some special presents done. I hate to admit it, but I haven’t even started Christmas stuff yet and I fear that my procrastination is going to bite me in the ass this year. I have so many friends having babies though! I couldn’t resist making some lovies for wee ones!

Not quite done yet...

I am almost done…maybe just a few finishing touches tonight and I should be complete. Then *maybe* I can start some gifts for Christmas.

Starting Round 2…

…of Blanketeer Blankets!

Progress after week 1.

Starting a baby blanket...

At the beginning of this month, we started ramping up our Blanketeers meetings. We are now meeting once a week as opposed to every other, and now that we have more people in the building, interest is building.

I started another group blanket and also another individual blanket. I was looking for an excuse to buy a set of Tunsian crochet hooks from the UK. Over there, KnitPro makes a set that are compatible with Knit Picks needle sets (of which I own two).

My new Tunisian Crochet hook set...

So I started another baby blanket that I can work on here and there between stitching together the next Blanketeer Blanket!

And while I am trying to figure out what to do…

Sunday, October 9th, 2011 | Baby things, blah blah blah, CogKNITive, Field Trip, FO's | No Comments

I figured I would go ahead and just post some of the pics I took at the retreat. I have lots to say, but I have had very little time to get everything organized and on the blog. Heck, there is stuff from, like, a month ago that I want to talk about!

It’s raining Baby Blankets!

Tuesday, September 6th, 2011 | Baby things, knitting, yarn snobbery | 1 Comment

Yeah, I am piling on.

Let’s be honest, I need another project like I need a hole in my head. I just can’t say no to cute little baby faces…even if some of them haven’t arrived yet.

It was actually my husband who egged me on to start this. A family friend and his wife just had a baby boy this weekend. I am fairly certain they don’t read my blog, so I can get away with blabbing about what I am doing. Soon I will have more baby projects that I will have to keep on the DL. That is going to be very hard for me…

Picking the right colored yarn is always the most agonizing part of the process for me. I am not a fan of traditional baby colors. When I had my twins, I tried to avoid the traditional blue/pink every chance I got. I had *strongly* suggested aqua and lavender, mostly because my favorite colors are teal and purple. Plus, I am not a huge fan of yellow. I just don’t like it.

My husband had suggested I look for yarn in the colors of the Phoenix Suns (because our friend B is a fan). Do you even know how hard that is?

Color scheme madness

I have to admit, I started looking at Michael’s first. I know my yarn snob friends are turning their noses up to this post right now…but just hear me out. The folks I am knitting this for have a brand new baby and are NOT KNITTERS. If any of you out there has knit a gift for a non-knitter, only to find out they accidentally felted whatever it was you knit them and now their pet is wearing it, know what I am talking about. I believe everything has a purpose in this world…even acrylic.

My explanation means nothing anyway though, because I couldn’t find the right color purpley-blue to get that whole Phoenix color scheme working anyway and ended up at my LYS. I couldn’t find the right yarn there either, but I decided to call the audible.

Orange and Gray

I decided to hand wind it so I could start right away.

It’s a 50/50 cotton/acrylic. The colors and the pattern are sporty and not traditional baby colors. It can be washed in a machine and should remain in good condition while getting softer. I think I did a pretty good job.
