Stocking knitting

Tuesday, January 13th, 2015 | At the office, blocking, Design, Holiday, knitting, macgyver, socks | No Comments

While we are on the topic of what I did this Christmas…another good reason to pace myself is actually knitting jobs. They come around every once in awhile, and usually around the holidays.

This year I had a paid knitting job that was interesting and fun. A friend at work wanted a stocking in time for son’s first Christmas. The catch was to try to match it to her and her husbands existing stockings…which were machine knit, flat.

No problem.

It made good Saturday Morning diner knitting.

I charted out the pattern and adjusted it to knit in the round from the toe up. The only thing that really had me stumped was the cuff, which was ribbed in stockinette. I found out later, thanks to Courtney, that this is something that is achieved in machine knitting with weights. I decided to try and recreate it by slipping stitches in stockinette and blocking it out with straws. It gave it an interesting texture and I liked it more than if I would have stuck with standard 1×1 ribbing.

Crafty holiday

Sunday, January 11th, 2015 | Amigurumi, At the office, crafts, crochet, FO's, Geekery, Holiday | No Comments

It certainly has been busy, busy times. The holidays are busy for all fiber artists. It’s part of the reason why my knitting group celebrates Christmas in February. It’s just more realistic for us.

Plus, ya know, there is that thing that keeps my busy most days called “my job”. Yes, there’s that.

Speaking of my job, it’s been terribly exciting lately lately… which means busy, too. I have a new cubicle and a place on a new show. I also have new work friends. I wanted to make something small for everyone, so I made little bags filled with homemade goodies and attached homemade ornaments to each one.

And Jason Funderburker got some striped socks and a new top hat!

As hard as it is to believe, I didn’t really make a lot of fibery things this Christmas. I actually tried pacing myself this year. Call it a Christmas gift to myself. 🙂

Spacegum

While we are on the topic of designing things, I have also spent some time working on a project for my friend Corey Booth. Corey was our summer intern here at work. As part of his internship, he had to pitch a show idea.

Pitch!

Since he had seen the frogs I had made for my coworkers, he suggested I give Gum a try. Are you kidding? Of course!! So before Corey left to go back home, he gave me some sketches to work from.

Corey’s sketches and the beginning of a body.

So, I decided to work on Gum during Knit Night with my girlfriends. Slowly but surely, he started to take shape.

I was really pleased with how he turned out. He is all done and now living in his new home in Detroit!

Maybe it’s time to start…

Monday, November 17th, 2014 | Amigurumi, At the office, crafts, crochet, Design, FO's, Pattern, Toys | No Comments

This is really exciting for me! I am starting to get messages on tumblr from people looking to get their hands on my frogs.

Screen Shot 2014-11-14 at 9.07.47 AM

I never get messages on tumblr!

I think it is time for me to get serious about writing the pattern. I need to look into a few things (like if the cartoon powers that be would be cool with it), but I am planning on doing this soon.

Be patient and keep your eyes peeled, Tumblr friends!

Working Frogs…

Friday, November 14th, 2014 | Amigurumi, At the office, crochet, Design, FO's | 1 Comment

Ahh, yes. The day job.

Over The Garden Wall finally airing is bittersweet. People have been posting all kinds of love for the show. However, it also means things have wound down and people have gone their separate ways. It’s been the best working experience I’ve ever had. I am truly grateful to have worked with such amazing and talented people.

People are starting to ask about the frog. Maybe it’s time I wrote a pattern?

Adrienne and I threw together crew themed costumes at the last minute. Yay, sewing skills!

On to more adventures! I have two other productions to keep me plenty busy! Maybe working on patterns might be a good lunchtime activity?

Small projects…

Saturday, September 27th, 2014 | At the office, FO's, Geekery, hats, knitting, Pattern | No Comments

Have I ever mentioned how much I like small projects? I actually feel like I am accomplishing something. Good thing too since most of my knitting projects have pretty much been cast to the side for all the rest of the stuff I am trying out.

IMG_3956.JPG

Small projects are great for lunchtime knitting at work!

This is a special hat though. My mom had mentioned that she knew a woman through one of her scrapbooking sites who had a little girl that just had a brain tumor removed. Her name is Rori and this hat is hers.

I was sitting in our editor’s office here at work not too long ago when I got a message from Rori’s mom saying that they had just received the hat and sent me a picture of her wearing it. It totally made my day.

Funny how the internet can bring people together.

If you’re interested in this hat pattern, it is Hermione’s Cable and Eyelet Hat and you can find it here.

Mystery Fan Art.

Tuesday, August 19th, 2014 | Amigurumi, At the office, blah blah blah, FO's, Toys | 1 Comment

Okay…so I originally wrote this post awhile ago…long before I knew what was actually going on with any of this. I saved it in my drafts (which is becoming more and more cluttered these days) thinking that later this year, when I am able to talk about it, I would go ahead and show everyone.

I had taken this picture right after I was done making a few of these….then pixelated it because I technically can’t show you what it is.

phototest

Mysterious mystery.

But then this happened and since I work on this show, I am going to feel free to straight up pimp it’s tumblr out on my blog. Plus there’s that thing ….ya know…I made the little guy pictured in the profile pic.

I am thinking once I get a moment, maybe I should write up the pattern. Maybe someone might want one of their own.
