Gifts for birds…

Sunday, August 24th, 2014 | fiber, Field Trip, Random Craftiness, yarn | No Comments

For a while I’ve been collecting scraps of yarn and bits of fiber leftover from various projects I have been working on. The intention was to go out into the world and stick them in places where the birds could get them. I live in a condo, so there isn’t really anyplace for me to have one of those suet feeder things to stuff with this sort of thing.

A bag of scraps…

So on a Saturday morning, I handed bits of yarn to my kids and had them leave them around the neighborhood. They hid bits in bushes and trees. This way the birds of Burbank will have truly lovely nests.

Practice, practice, practice

Playing around with patterns.

While I wait for all of my supplies to arrive for that project I keep procrastinating on, I decided I should try out a few things so I know what I am doing when I actually do this stuff for reals.

I have so much scrap yarn for this stuff!

First things first…I needed to try out drawing a design and weaving on top of it. No problem…achievement unlocked! Oh look, I can make fringe too!

20140704-205554.jpg

All done!

I also attached it to one of the sticks my daughter and her friends collected for me at the last Girl Scout event. Yay, nature!

20140704-205604.jpg

I played around in the round too.

I also tried weaving on an embroidery hoop. Just something easy so I could try it out.

Then took them to work and decorated my cubicle.

Now I have proper office decorations. Maybe I will start a collection of all of my little experiments and just hang them up at work. It’ll give me something to stare at and pet if I ever get stressed out at work.

And she’s off…

Today is a big day! I just dropped my little girl off at Girl Scout camp and she is off to enjoy a weekend of fun in the wilderness with a bunch of her friends.

I had posted a picture of her for my friends and relatives to see and was asked if she had a sit-upon. I didn’t realize these things had been around for so long. I don’t remember making one when I was in Girl Scouts, but my mom and aunt  remember making them when they were kids…and they have a significant amount of years on me.

For those of you who don’t know what a sit-upon is, the Girl Scouts of America defines it as “A lightweight pad or mat used when sitting on the floor or ground.” Pretty self explanatory.

The supplies…

My daughter had missed one of her Brownie meetings while my parents were in town visiting, so we needed to play catch up. As part of earning her first badge, she made a pretty snazzy sit upon. My mom and I found the supplies at our local JoAnn’s and she put it all together with minimal help.

All finished!!

Now she has it packed up and ready to use it on her first camping trip!

Doctor Who 50th!

So, I said I was going to do it…and I did! I had a Doctor Who 50th Anniversary viewing party!

20131124-101637.jpg

Me and my girl before everyone arrived. We’re both wearing our Her Universe dresses and the headbands I’ve been talking about!

Eleven!

After we watched (and gasped…and cheered…and maybe shed a tear or two), we had craft time! I saw a really great blog post from Doodle Craft on how to make your own sonic screwdriver pens! You can check out the post HERE.

Everyone making their sonics!

Both kids and adults enjoyed craft time! It was super fun to all get around the table, play with some sculpey and discuss what we thought of the show.

Our Sonic Screwdrivers!

We had so much fun! I feel like I should have some sort of craft at every party!

Why is there no knitting in my crafting?

All of last week was crunch time. I am not sure how it happened, but I was the last one in my family to get prepared for Halloween. Maybe it was because my costume had the most the DIY.

20131104-082147.jpg

There was felt…and hot glue gun injuries.

20131104-082206.jpg

Paint to ruin my manicure. (But let’s be honest, I do my own manicures…so bad could I have possibly ruined it?)

20131104-082222.jpg

Sharpies and wigs.

20131104-082238.jpg

And quite a lot of hand sewing things to other things…yes, I’m sewing these as I’m wearing them.

20131104-082247.jpg

And makeup (which is an area that is pretty foreign to me).

It was a lot of DIY, but I think it turned out okay. Granted, no one (well maybe a few small children) knew who I was and my husband’s store bought mask and gloves were a bigger hit (which is annoying when you put that much work into a costume), but my daughter appreciated that I dressed up as a Monster High Doll for her, even without my finding latex gills.

No rest for the crafter…

I know it has been a while since my last post. Boy, have I been crazy busy. Now that I have less time to work on projects, I am trying to jam every available second into getting things done…on top of the general care and feeding of the twins…oh, and 3rd grade math (ugh).

It seems like a lot of the projects I need to get done are not necessarily knitting related. I guess my crafting sort of happens in waves. A wave of knitting…a wave of spinning…and currently, a wave of sewing.

Lil’ girls favorite skinny jeans.

My kids seem to wreck stuff at record speed. Clothing, shoes, anything really.

My daughter was so upset that she ripped a hole in her favorite pair of skinny jeans. The hole was in a strange place up high on her pant leg and there was no way that little 8 year old was going to be sporting those jeans to school anymore. She was so sad…but it wasn’t anything a little star fabric from my friend David and a little embroidery thread couldn’t fix!

Fixing Lil’ guys backpack.

Then there is my son…who couldn’t explain to me why, after one month of school, his TMNT backpack had a gaping hole in the bottom. Really? Like, what the hell? I frankenstein’d that bad boy back together.

There is other mending that needs to be done, but I have to do this stuff in baby steps. Hand sewing takes time!

20130923-222817.jpg

Measuring hands.

Then there is my actual sewing project…clothing for Gray (yeah, remember him?). After my whole process of agonizing over how not to mess it up, I went forward with my actual plan (which worked of course, I don’t know why I torture myself). Those sleeves were a total pain, but Gray’s hands fit through them, so I am happy about that. I also took a little time to draw up rough pattern, so as to make my life a little easier should I need to do this again.

Seaming a little shirt. I tried desperately not to sew it to itself.

Keeping busy, kinda.

I’ve been wavering between levels of crazy busy and being a complete slug (but mostly on the slug end). I have had absolutely no desire to work on my safety scarf, which is kind of ridiculous because I could probably bang that thing out in no time if I tried.

It’s just that I have been wanting to work on other things…that is, when I feel like working on anything at all.

I’ve been pinning fabric in preparation for more sewing (that would be done by now if I weren’t afraid of sleeves), I’ve been learning some new kumihimo patterns, learning to tie heart knots, and even working on my Celestarium edging. All of this while consuming Seasons 1 and 2 of The Killing…in a record 3 days.

And today I play the role of…

Over achiever. Or maybe it’s just the caffeine?

Even my friends are finding my productivity slightly annoying...

Even my friends are finding my productivity slightly annoying…

It’s sometime in the wee hours of the morning and I have been running non-stop since 8am. I’m not even particularly tired right this second (check on me again in 30 minutes when the inevitable crash happens).

I’m eager to get stuff finished. See, once again I’ve been keeping to myself, busily toiling away at secret things. It’s all very intriguing, I’m sure. ::Insert eye roll here.:: Many of my friends haven’t seen me in awhile, but I’ll be emerging soon. I’m heading to Stitches West this Friday!

Among the many things I have been working on are patterns. As a matter of fact, I typed up two more designs today and they are ready for testing!

Of course, I have one more pattern I’d like to get written and typed before Friday, but I have a paying thing I need to finish first. The race is on to see how much I can get done. I will need to set aside at least 5 minutes to pack for this weekend.

It doesn't look like much, but trust me when I say there is major multitasking happening here.
